Speaker of the House: John Boehner (Republican) The Speaker is elected by the members of the House of Representatives, and acts as the leader of the house. The Speaker presides over the house, is the official spokesperson of the House, and is second in line of presidential succession. House Majority Leader: Kevin McCarthy (Republican) The majority leader is in charge of scheduling legislation that is to be heard on the floor, planning the daily, weekly, and annual legislative agendas, checking in with party members to determine their opinions on various issues, as well as working to advance the goals of the majority party. House Minority Leader: Nancy Pelosi (Democrat) The minority leader serves as floor leader of the minority party. The minority leader holds many of the same responsibilities as the majority leader, but he/she works to defend the minority party and its policies. Senate Majority Leader: Mitch McConnell (Republican) The majority leader serves as the spokesperson for their party on the issues being discussed. The majority leader works to coordinate party strategy and keep their parties united on roll-call votes. He/she spends much of their time on the Senate floor, to open the day's proceedings, keep legislation moving, and protect the rights of party members. The majority leader has the power to be recognized first in the Senate when they are debating, which allows for him to be the Senate Minority Leader: Harry Reid (Democrat) The minority leader has many of the same responsibilities as the majority leader. They are the spokesperson for their party, plan out party strategy, and keep the party together on roll-call votes. Qualifications and Terms for Members of the House of Representatives
Each representative must have been a citizen of the United States for a minimum seven years, be at least 25 years old, as well as live in the state that they represent at the time of the election. Each representative serves in the House for two year terms.

Each Senator must be at least 30 years old, have been a United States citizen for a minimum of nine years, and live in the state that they are representing at the time of the election. Senators have 6 year terms.
